What is fire-resistant glass?

The terms "fire-resistant glass" and "fire-rated glass" refer to any glass that has been tested and proven to meet fire-resistance standards. The main British standard for fire resistance is BS EN 1364-1:2015. Fire-rated glass is sometimes called "heatproof glass" or "fireproof glass". This isn't strictly correct, as no type of glass is entirely fireproof. Rather, glass is rated based on how long it can withstand fire. For instance, E120 fire-rated glass panels will provide 120 minutes of protection from heat and flames.

Is toughened glass heat-resistant?

Conventional toughened glass provides some level of heat protection, withstanding temperatures up to 250ºC (482ºF). This makes it around five times more heat-resistant than standard annealed glass. However, 250ºC is nothing compared to the standards set for fire-rated glass. To be considered fire-resistant, glass must withstand temperatures beyond 870ºC (1598ºF) for 30 minutes or more. TG FR is a toughened and laminated fire-rated glass. This means it delivers the benefits of fire protection and impact resistance in one state-of-the-art product.

What rating is ToughGlaze TG FR fire-rated laminated glass?

Our fire-rated glass is tested to European standards and supplied in ratings from E30 to EI120. Each glass carries its own certification, and we maintain production records for each panel manufactured. These are available on request.

Can you cut fire-rated glass?

As a type of heat-resistant tempered glass, TG FR can't be cut after the thermal tempering process has been completed. Like all forms of toughened glass, it would shatter instantly if an attempt was made to cut it. However, we can supply high-quality fire-rated glass cut to any size or shape. This is because we carry out all additional processing – including cutting – before the glass is tempered.
